Disappointed
I had high hopes for Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Baccarat Rouge 540… after it has been touted as one of the world’s most desirable fragrances. It’s no doubt a superior blend by a very creative perfumer with an interesting backstory… but read on for my humble opinion ⤵️ In my heart I wanted to love it, but it just didn’t hit the spot at all. This just confused me, where are all these ambergris, jasmine and gourmand notes they promise? And why does it smell like something Patrick Bateman in American Psycho would wear, it certainly has that 1990s Wall Street suited bankers freshness; musky and woody but also bright and vibrant. Great if you like that kind of thing: I used to like these kind of fragrances in the 80’s (YSL’s zesty Jazz being a prime example) but now I find them nauseating. This lingers for hours with no let up, the silage is crazy too so go steady with this, just one spritz or dab is enough to project into next week! Here are the actual notes: saffron, amberwood and cedar that is a little bit woody, a little bit sweet, a little bit spicy, a little bit floral and totally distinct. For me I get the saffron and the cedar and a faint almost lavender type floral but the overpowering nose is just a grapefruity type zest. This is a strong individual fragrance, it’s unisex leaning more towards the masc for me, but I’m not bothered by genderisms… I just don’t like this one.

For me, it’s a smooth blend of saffron, ambergris, and a gentle resinous warmth that feels addictive. It’s soft but incredibly long-lasting scent that stays on clothes for days and leaves a beautiful, elegant trail. It’s the kind of perfume that feels expensive, confident, and a little bit mysterious. Perfect for night outs, cold weather, or whenever you want to feel unforgettable.

There is a reason this perfume is so,populaar. It’s DNA is suited to both men and women and has an addictive quality. I enjoyed wearing it so much that I began to crave the scent and I will be getting myself a full bottle.
