All you need is a measuring tape and your best-fitting, unpadded underwire bra.

1 Measure your band size

Wearing your best-fitting, unpadded underwire bra, wrap a soft tape measure around your body, just below your bust. Keep it parallel to the ground and pull it snug. If you have an in-between number, round up to the nearest whole number.

2 Measure your bust size

Move the tape measure up around the fullest part of your bust, once again keeping it parallel to the ground. Pull it firm, but not tight. Round up to the nearest whole number.

Fit Fixes

Troubleshooting the most common bra problems.

If you’re experiencing spillover: Go up a cup size or try a fuller-coverage silhouette, like an unlined minimizer.

If your cups wrinkle or gape at the top or sides: Try going down a cup size or get a new bra! Yours simply may have lost its shape over time.

If your band digs in even at the lowest hook setting: Try going up a band size and down a cup size.

If your band is riding up: Try loosening the straps. If that doesn’t do the trick, go down a band size.

If your band is hitting low: Try tightening the straps. If that doesn’t help, go down a band size.

If your straps are digging in (and loosening them up doesn’t help): Try going down a band size or opt for a bra with thicker straps.

If your straps are constantly slipping (and they’re already tightened all the way): Try going down a cup or band size—or check out a U-back bra.

If your underwire digs in at the sides: Try going up a cup size or look for a supportive wireless bra.

If your center front is gaping: Double-check your cup size—it could be too big.
